He was unique and fun to be with! I remember when we told Force, ya, we would give him a Date, but he had to bring his own Grease Sweep, and the after the Race fun with Uncle Beav's, our Jet Van Project, and so much more. Schrod was always thinking ahead of his time and will truely be missed.
Just last year at My Monster Truck Show, it was a thrill to have him as my guest, as I wanted to turn the Mike over to a true Pro, that could really entertain the crowd. A True Showman, and a Class Act!
To the Family! As you can see by the post, Richard touched a lot of people, and for that you should be proud!
You will be missed, RIP, my Friend.

I welded the new design of the tunnel and increased the angle of the engine to compensate for loss of airflow under the car, I also built and welded the cage in the intake we also increased airflow by making the tunnel bigger than the intake of the turbine this involved Richard and 2 others to assist Me, Richard operated the TIG foot pedal annother pushed the tube into place while someone else pushed filler rod between My body and the tunnel while I held the torch and welded. I'm a large frame Man with a 48 chest and I wear a 48 jacket, in a 20 inch wide tube,(get the idea?). I also saw Richard and his son several weeks before his passing on his way through going to the northeast.
That man never met a stranger and We became fast friends, trading jokes and funny e-mail whenever we had one to send to each other, I feel cheated We could'nt have gone to the grand nationals like We had planned, I'm also great-ful that I had the oppurtinity to have such a good Friend if only for a year or so, but I do miss His wit. I am ashamed that we haven't remained in touch over the years; I just recently found out about his passing. I met Richard and Dave McClelland in the early 80's as the car club I belonged to at the time helped put on the very first Super Chevy Sunday at the now defunct Orange County International Raceway. A couple of years later Richard hired me as Car Show Chairman for the Super Chevy Show and I also helped out with Emergency West. Together Richard and I made the Super Chevy Show what it is today; many policies and procedures are still being utilized. Ahhhh, those were the days! One particular funny story comes to mind: we were in Indianapolis for the Super Chevy Show. A local car rental agency there had a couple of ex-hearse converted into a small limo with a big plastic animal attached to the roof. I rented the 'chicken' and on Sunday morning came driving into the race park with this giant chicken hearse. Richard asked me (demanded?) to make that thing disappear from sight; trying real hard to be stern, but as I walked away he couldn't contain himself any longer and busted out laughing.
As with everybody else I had really good times with Richard and in turn got to meet alot of my childhood drag heros. I look back fondly on those days! Good-bye Richard. | | | Post Reply | Display replies to this message

In 1985 I met one of my childhood heros at a Super Chevy Race in Dallas. 5 yrs later our paths crossed again operating the Street Machine Nats in Springfield Mo. Richard asked me to help with the Truckin Showtime shows and introduced me to the world of wheelstanding. During 1992%2693 we toured around the country with "Boss" giving this Missouri farm boy some of the best memories any diehard gearhead could have. When Richard was in the midwest annoucing a race, or just travling through he would call me up and invite me to go. Richard introduced me to almost all of my childhood heros over the years to which I'll always be thankful. I also enjoyed meeting Gina and Beaux and crashing on the couch when I was in town.(experincing my first earthquake sitting in the kitchen playing with Beaux discussing which was worst with Gina - Thunderstorms in the midwest or earthquakes in california.) When we were on the road Richard would always tell me about Chris and Tina- I never had the chance to meet them but felt like I knew them. When I started to build "Wild Thang"(my wheelstander), Richard helped me sort out a few engineering challenges that I was having. I last saw Schroeder at SEMA 3 years ago (promoting Diesel Drag racing)- We spent a couple hours catching up, telling stories. He showed me a picture of Beaux taking a ride in Focus- We talked about doing a project together again....what I'd give to get to have that chance. I owe him so much. Gina,Beaux,Schroeder family - I offer my humblest condolences. If ever in the SW Missouri area - you will always have a open door to our home and hearts. - God Bless- "Raines" | | | Post Reply

As the announcer for the defunt Pomona Street Legal drags I used to welcome anyone that wanted to sit in. No one, - No one, was more fun than Rich. We even announced together at some of the Nationals at Pomona. What a flippin good time that was.
When I mentioned to him I thought it'd be neat to build my '66 GTO into a wheelstander you know what he said. "Do it, I'll show you everything you need to know."
He suffered no fools and was a great friend. I am so sad over his last leave.

He took me in as an advertising sales rep and eventually made me his sidekick for the magazine. Everything I do today in business is in some way due to what he taught me and what I experienced with him. I still remember the stories he used to tell me about the "old days" and the people he knew.
He was the kind of person that said "if you want to learn how to do something, just do it. No one is going to show you how." I still hold those lessons dearly.

Words don't really seem adequate to describe Richard, because with me, it is more of a feeling. How do you describe a chance meeting with someone that so profoundly could touch your life? He was stuck in a hospital in Cleveland, OH and I asked him...What can I bring you Richard? His answer...Gummy Bears!!! Not just any brand...they had to be Haribo Gummy Bears because they had the best flavor. So, I brought him a package every couple of days. I would stop by to see him after work and he would be watching the Speed channel or something else to do with racing most of the time. He knew everybody and their brother and their dog!!! He was always asking about the racing circuit...What was going on? Who had been there? What had happened? He knew so much and still wanted more. I would find websites for him and he would read about his friends and he always had a story to tell. One day there was an incredible lightning storm, so I opened the curtains and we watched the bolts come one after another with thunder so loud it shook the building. God was putting on an incredible show. Then as quickly as the storm came, it left. Richard and I just sat there and we both said wow at the same time. The show reminded me of the first time I saw Richard in the Focus jet car. Just wow.
To Gina...Giant hugs. You know how I feel and I am a really good listener if you just need to talk. To Beaux... Hugs to you even if they aren't cool. Your dad has given you the tools to do great things and I do not doubt that you will continue to make him proud. Take your mom to Outback one night and think of us goofy Ohioans. (vegetarian huh) To Chris...When your dad would talk about your adventures he would get a twinkle in his eye, and if he got started about the grandkids...well he just went on and on with a huge smile. Please take care. To Tina...When your dad would talk to you on the phone he would always have a big smile. Sorry I didn't get the chance to meet you. You definitely have a special dad. Take care.
To Richard...You will always be in my heart. You went out with the meteor shower...I went out and watched it for 3 nights in a row, twice when I was in California visiting my family and once in Ohio. Every night I would see these incredible streaks across the sky and I just know it was all for you. The nights were so clear with no clouds. It was great. When you are in Heaven, if you see my dad Bill, talk to him about his car club he had in San Francisco called The Searchers. I know you guys will get along. Love, Chris Haskell | | | Post Reply

We became friends...then eventually co workers at Argus Publishers in the late 70's/early 80's. I worked on PHR...Schrodes on Super Chevy.
When we staged the first Super Chevy event in 1981...Richard was my right and left hands. This contintued throughout the time that I had the responsibility for event series...then he took over the role when I moved on into self employment. You could not have asked for a better friend, a more willing helper and an all around good will ambassador for whatever project he was involved with at the moment.
I told him he was nuts when he said he was going to build a twin engine wheelstanding pickup truck...boy, was I wrong. One of the most impressive exhibition vehicles of all time.
The same can be said for the jet powered Focus This.
Richard had a knack for finding the niche that would be extremely popular with the fans and also a most marketable product.
We never lost touch through the years, whether it was announcing NHRA races, seeing each other at the SEMA show or spending hours on the phone telling each other great stories which had maybe a trace of basis in fact!
Fast forward to '07....it was just a month or so ago that Richard and I met up again, this time at Dave Danish's funeral. We were standing in the back of the chapel, no seats remaining...and I experienced a low blood sugar attack and started to pass out. Richard grabbed me and held me up...without making a disruptive scene at the funeral. Needless to say, I was needing some candy quick...he found some...I powered it down and was fine.
Once again, Richard to my rescue, as he was so many times in the years of working together on Super Chevy Sunday....times that I will truly treasure.
To Gina, Beaux, Chris, Tina and all the friends and family of Richard, my deepest sympathy. I am proud to have been able to be his friend.

It was just a few weeks ago that we were out in back of my shop redoing the trailer and car graphics so Richard could leave on this last tour. We never imagined as Richard drove out the gate that it would be the last time. There are no words to expressthe sorrow my wife Cindy and I are feeling. I haven't known Richard as long as some of the others, I met him about seven years ago at Pomona when we were setting up for Ford's first venture into the Sport Compact Market. I noticed that his website indicated that he brought GM into the Sport Compact field, well he also did it with Ford Motor Company. I've called Bob Kern from GM to let him know what had happened and he will probably log on very shortly.
Richard, always, was a visionary as to how to present an idea, a product or an event to get the maximum results. If there ever was a problem, there was a way to work it out, if there was an opportunity, there was a way to capatalize on it. He never stopped planning, thinking and being a consumante professional when dealing with people and corporations.
Above and beyond the corporate side, I counted him as a friend. Numerous planning phone calls about an event or opportunity never ended with 'We cannot do that', with Richard there was always a way.
Being one of the two guys on a Ford Trailer discussing the Focus Jet to finally seeing it run at Milan this year was a tribute to Richard and his dreams.
I will miss you. God Bless | | | Post Reply

Richard you had so many friends and special memories from them and family. You were not just a "next door neighbor" but a friend to us. I think we will always remember you sitting in the "scary" chair on Halloween night, putting on the best show in town. After visiting your house the kids always would say how much they enjoyed your yard and all the spooky things they would see. I think Beaux and our sons will always have a special bond even as they are growing up and have other friends. They will always remember the great times they had together as kids.
Beaux, You know the special place in our hearts for you. Gina, it was very clear to us how you and Richard had such a loving marriage. May God give you the strength you need right now and Richards everlasting guiding light to you and Beaux. With our love, Will, Denise, Jeremy and James | | | Post Reply

Words seem so inadequate at this moment, yet I am compelled to thank you both for sharing your home while Tim and I and all the other characters that launched a magazine together with Richard invaded your home. During that time, Richard's eternal optimism kept everyone going, and usually laughing in the process. Being slightly ahead of his time was apparently a Schroeder trademark, one we can remember fondly.
In reference to Beaux being a 'work in progress', I'm sure Richard's influence will continue to be felt throughout his life, just as it has been in all of ours.

Before long Richard proved to all that the "art" of drag racing was more that 1/4 mile runs. He led and educated his his peers on how to maximize thier personalities and make drag racing a profession.
Often, he would refer potential sponsors to other who he felt to do them the best justice rather than "hog" the goodies for himself. This unselfish attiude should be appreciated by anyone who came across this wonderful guy.
